Dark Spots & Underarm Discoloration: My Shower Routine Fix

Struggling with underarm darkness or dark spots on your body can be frustrating—and sometimes embarrassing. The good news? You don’t need expensive treatments to see real results. With the right shower routine, you can brighten your underarms, fade hyperpigmentation, and feel confident again in sleeveless tops or swimsuits.

Here’s the step-by-step shower routine that helped me reduce underarm discoloration naturally and gently. 💧

🌿 Step 1: Start With Warm Water to Open Pores

Warm water helps:

  • Open pores for better product absorption
  • Loosen dirt, sweat, and dead skin
  • Soften darkened areas for gentler exfoliation

Take 2–3 minutes to stand under warm water and let it prep your skin.

🧼 Step 2: Use a Gentle pH-Balanced Body Wash

Dark spots can get worse with harsh soaps. Use a non-irritating, fragrance-free cleanser.
Recommended:

  • Dove Sensitive Skin
  • CeraVe Body Wash for Rough & Bumpy Skin
  • Aveeno Soothing Body Wash

Massage under your arms and on dark areas in small circles using your hands or a soft cloth.

🧽 Step 3: Exfoliate 2–3 Times a Week (Key Step)

Dead skin buildup = trapped odor and discoloration. Gently exfoliate to brighten over time.
Options:

🔹 Physical Exfoliants:

  • Sugar scrub with licorice or turmeric extract
  • Exfoliating gloves (very gentle only!)

🔹 Chemical Exfoliants:

  • AHA/BHA body washes (glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid)
  • Targeted pads or gels like Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid (used lightly on underarms)

⚠️ Never exfoliate broken or irritated skin. Be gentle—think polish, not scrub.

🧴 Step 4: Shave With Care (Or Avoid If Possible)

Shaving causes micro-cuts that lead to pigmentation.
If you shave:

  • Use a sharp razor
  • Apply coconut oil or aloe-based shaving cream
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth

For fewer dark spots:
Switch to waxing or laser when possible.

❄️ Step 5: Rinse With Cold Water

Cold water helps:

  • Close pores
  • Calm inflammation
  • Prevent bacteria from entering exfoliated skin

It also helps seal in hydration when you apply your moisturizer after.

💧 Step 6: Apply a Brightening Body Lotion Post-Shower

While your skin is still damp:

  • Use a lightweight lotion with ingredients that reduce pigmentation:
    • Niacinamide
    • Licorice root extract
    • Vitamin C
    • Alpha Arbutin

Recommended:

  • The Ordinary Glycolic Acid (on a cotton pad for underarms 2x/week)
  • Urban Skin Rx Even Tone Body Cream
  • Advanced Clinicals Vitamin C Lotion

🙅‍♀️ Avoid These Common Mistakes:

  • Skipping SPF on exposed areas — yes, even underarms if you’re out in the sun
  • Using deodorants with alcohol, aluminum, or strong fragrance
  • Shaving too frequently or with dull blades
  • Over-exfoliating (can make darkness worse)

🌟 Consistency Is Queen

Brightening dark spots takes time. Stick to this routine 2–4 weeks consistently and you’ll notice:

  • Brighter, more even-toned skin
  • Less irritation and bumps
  • Smooth, healthy underarms

💖 Final Thoughts

Dark underarms and spots don’t define you—but it feels so good to take care of them with love and intention. This shower routine has been a game changer for me—and it can be for you too.

You’re not alone, and your glow-up is just getting started. ✨
